Montblanc has created the Montblanc Meisterstück Calligraphy collection to celebrate the art and culture of writing by combining nib development and craftsmanship. Inspired by the exquisite Japanese art of Chiso, Montblanc has released a limited edition fountain pen: the Meisterstück Calligraphy Maki-e Limited Edition 88, as part of the collection and an icon of the line.
Drawing on the centuries-old artistic heritage of Chisō, the premier kimono atelier Yuzen created exquisite silk kimonos for the Imperial Court, using the Japanese handmade maki-e lacquer technique.
The cherry blossom design of the Meisterstück Calligraphy Maki-e Limited Edition 88 took three months to complete. Montblanc artisans use the ancient “urushi” lacquer technique on the cap and barrel, applying, smoothing, sanding and polishing multiple paper-thin layers of semi-transparent blue lacquer by hand. Gold powder and tiny particles of cracked abalone shell (Raden) are then skillfully interspersed between the layers, creating a delicate mosaic effect.
Inspired by the Autumn moon and the traditional Japanese cherry blossom symbol, the cap of this Edition is decorated with Au750 white gold inlaid with a full moon and delicately hand-painted flower branches made from Au750 gold powder.
The design of the limited edition pens aims to capture the Japanese philosophy of the eternal beauty of calligraphy, as opposed to the fleeting, inevitable symbol of death. Cherry blossoms are one of the most important symbols in Japanese culture, heralding the beginning of spring and symbolizing youth, awakening in life and budding love.
