Lapis beads have been found in Neolithic burial sites at Mehrgarh, the Caucasus, and even from Afghanistan to Mauritania. It was used in the mask of Tutankhamun (1341-1323 BC).
By the late Middle Ages, lapis lazuli began to be exported to Europe, where it was ground into powder and made into a deep blue that made it the highest quality and most expensive blue pigment.
